A large country house now ruined by fire.my first and only visit was when i attended a dinner and dance  for the company i worked  for in the 1960`s. Jeyes Chemist Northampton. The meal was a 7 or 8 course dinner and we was waited on by many staff dressed in black and white uniforms similar to Downton Abbey. For the evening we felt like the upper class being waited on and dancing in the main hall. It was my  birthday and and the band played happy birthday to me.I danced with one of my work colleagues who i spoke to on the works phone each day, when i ordered medical items  for the chemist where i worked at 227 Wellingborough Road Northampton

The house was designed in 1860 for Lord Overstone [Samuel Loyd] and Lady Overstone. She died before it was completed.

The house was rented out to a shipping magnate before being sold in 1929 for a girls school

In 2001 a fire destroyed 60% of the building. It is now  for sale  for £1million pound. It was left to their daughter Lady Overstone

Northampton Castle remains and Northampton Castle Station

IN 1965 Northampton Castle remains were unearthed before the new railway station was built.

October 2012 the station car park has been dug up and the castle walls were found in the short stay car park.

As children our father who family  worked on the railway always told that the castle lay under the old railway station.

I didnt know at the time that some of my mothers ancestors had lived at the castle in 1217. It was at Christmas time and they entertained many people. Margaret Fitzgerald was married to her 2nd husband whom the marriage was arranged by the king. She was frightened of him as he was violent

I wanted to see where the castle was.It has taken me over 60 years before i have seen a photo of the castle wall in the station car park  All that remains on show was the castle gate. In October 2012 the ruins of the castle walls were found. This is good news , maybe the town will preserve what remains of the castle as it is a big part of the history of the town.

2013 a new railway station is being built and the castle wall will be preserved by glass.

At Christmas 1217 Margaret Fitzgerald and her 2nd husband stayed at Northampton Castle and entertained well. From accounts of the stay the weather was very cold. Margarets grandmother was Matlida Golafre from Northamptonshire. The name was changed later to an English spelling of Gulliver.
