The factory FORTH STREET NEWCASTLE. where JOHN STEPHENSON worked and was killed. It was owned by Robert Stephenson, his first cousin.

 John Rose of IBSTOCK Leicester.

Gertrude Rose who married Alfred Henry Clarke of Blisworth. She was 4th cousin of John Rose on her paternal side of the family.

John Rose was a Train Engine Driver as stated in the 1881 census, and ,

married Ann Stephenson ,daughter of John Stephenson who was brother to GEORGE STEPHENSON. GEORGE STEPHENSON went to night school to learn to read , write and arithmetic. He went on to become a civil and mechanic engineer[FATHER OF THE RAILWAYS] He  died in Chesterfield and is buried in the Holy Trinity Church there.A statue of George Stephenson was at the old EUSTON RAILWAY STATION IN LONDON. When that was demolished in 1962 , it was removed to National Railway Museum in YORK.

One of Ann and John sons, John  Stephenson Rose married Isabella Burnside whose mother was JANE WEDGWOOD from the large WEDGWOOD family.

This marriage brought together the ROSE.STEPHENSON, WEDGWOOD familes. The trains and the potteries together .

There is a plaque on the railway station in Turin Italy[Torino Porto Nuova] dedicated to George and Robert Stephenson                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The Rose family i am writing about came from Belton ,Loughborough Leicestershire  The family had been there for many years .There are records since 1600`s.John has been a favourite name in the family and used a lot.  John Rose  he married Sarah Wilson and had a family, their son Ben  Rose married Ann . this is the line of family my paternal grandmother Gertrude Rose came from.

Gertrude Clarke nee Rose her paternal great grandfather Robert Rose b 1780 at Belton Leicestershire his brother also Daniel Rose had family and one of his great x2 grandsons was taken to POW camp in KUCHING BORNEO BATU LINTANG SARAWALK MALAYSIA 1942-1945.He died in Manfield Hospital Northampton 1979.

Gertrude Clarke nee Rose also died in Manfield Hospital Northampton in 1960`s.

In the Napoleonic wars  ,a Benjamin Rose born 1771c in Belton,Leicestershire joined up  to serve for his country. He was in the 9th Foot reg. On his return to England he lived as a Chelsea Pensioner at Royal Hospital Chelsea in 1816, aged 45.

John Rose their son married Ann Stephenson ,daughter of John Stephenson who was brother of George Stephenson . My family had always been interested in trains . It is good that we have a very famous clever person in the family by marriage of John Rose and Ann Stephenson.

George and his son Robert Stephenson started a locomotive manufacturing business in 1821-1823.It was called Robert Stephenson and co. They was the first company to build steam railway engines. When Robert died in 1859 the works employed 1.500 people[Graces Guide].The works was at Forth Street.Newcastle.

Margaret Thatcher nee Roberts , it was her mother Beatrice Ethel Stephenson who was also from the family of George Stephenson. Beatrice family lived in Lincolnshire. many generations before the family  had been born and worked in Newcastle.

There are many people with the surname of Stephenson .The names from George Stephenson brothers are the generation that continue to carry the future generations forward, namely Robert Stephenson and John Stephenson.

John Stephenson brother of George Stephenson worked for the company as a mechanic. He was killed by a fall of the Sheer legs. i think this is a crane used to lift carriages off their bogies and other uses.He died in 1831.

I am sure my late father who worked on the railway all his life would have been proud to hear about the connection. Ann and John Rose , their children were 5th cousins to George .They was,Mary Jane, John Stephenson Rose,Margaret Annie Rose,Hannah, Robert Stephenson Rose. he lived only two years, and Helen Susan Rose.

John Stephenson Rose married Isabella Burnside. She was daughter of Jane WEDGWOOD and Joseph Burnside.

George Henry Clarke , of Blisworth ,Northampton was 5th cousin to John Stephenson Rose who married Isabella daughter of Jane Burnside nee WEDGWOOD.

More to follow on this connection with the WEDGWOOD family.

Tony Wedgwood  Benn died 14th March 2014. He was related to the Wedgwood family through his paternal grandmother , Eliabeth Pickstone who was married to Sir John Benn.

From the 1911 census returns we find that there was many of the ROSE family  worked in the mines or the factories making hosiery. Gertrude Rose before her marriage to Alfred Henry Clarke had worked in a factory making hosiery. Her father John Rose is listed as a porter graner? I do know that George Clarke his grandson knew that at sometime he had worked as a miner. He ended up in his old age with mental problems and anger, he was taken to Narborough mental hospital to end his days.

Herbert Rose b 1875 was different and worked as a council school caretaker in Coalville Leicestershire .He was married to Eliza.

He emigrated to New Zealand. His granddaughter Marie lives in Auckland.

He is listed as having two children. Doris Lillian Rose and Cyril Herbert Rose
