History of Northampton
in 1836 St Andrews hospital was founded. it was called Northampton asylum. John Clare the poet died here 1864
1845 the railway station in Far Cotton was opened called Bridge Street
1848 the building society was built in Abington street, it was taken over many times.the building is used by the Northampton Radio.
1850 shoe factory owners built terraced houses for their shoe workers.
1859 Castle Station built on the site where Northampton Castle had stood
1863 Fountain on Market Square to commemorate the marriage of Prince of Wales to Princess Alexandra of Denmark
1864 the Guildhall built in St Giles Square.Tastefully extended
1872 a railway station built St Johns Street. 2012 building flats for students on the site that for many years was a car park.
1873 cattle market built, Victoria Promenade visited by farmers from all over the county. MORRISONS shop on the site and many town houses there also
1876 public swimming pool opened cattle market road. owned by Phipps brewery. it used waste heat from the brewery near by.
1886 cricket first played at county ground. then shared football pitch with Cobblers[ Northampton football]
1888 Northampton became county borough
J Grose started his bicycle and car business. he drove the first car in the town
1890 carnival parade. still going in 2012
1892 Lady Wantage donated Abington Manor and land for the town people to enjoy. it is now called Abington Park. was the home of William Shakespeare granddaughter
1901 Emporium Arcade built at the top of Market Square full of small individual shops.
1904 electric trams
1904 Co-Operative building opened Abington Street. Now used by many different shops . Access from St Giles Street to Abington Street by an arcade commonly called Co Op arcade
1908 Mrs Pankhurst addressed a meeting of the suffragettes
1910 express lifts opened. factory demolished and many houses built on site .
1910 Central library opened in Abington Street
2013 Fish Market demolished, we wait for a new bus station to be built on the site
2013 Northampton railway station to be demolished , a glass building to be built on the present car park, ruins of Northampton Castle to be preserved.
2013. september , st james tram and bus depot closing down and up for sale. group of people including paul and susan brown helping to save items of interest ,first bus wanted all things got rid of.
